Choose a bed and how you want the quilt to hang to get the finished size to make, then plan borders and backing from there.

How quilt size is calculated

Example: a queen mattress (60" × 80") with a 12" drop and 10" pillow tuck needs a quilt 60 + 24 = 84" wide and 80 + 12 + 10 = 102" long.

Questions quilters ask

What is the drop on a quilt?

The drop is how far the quilt hangs down over the side of the mattress. Measure from the top edge of the mattress to where you want the quilt to end. A drop equal to the mattress depth just covers the sides; add 4 to 6 inches more to hide a box spring.

What is a pillow tuck?

Extra length at the head of the bed that folds under and over the pillows. 10 to 12 inches is typical. Skip it if you use separate shams on top of the quilt.

What size is a queen quilt?

There is no single standard. A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches, so a queen quilt that covers the mattress with a 12-inch drop and a 10-inch pillow tuck is 84 by 102 inches. Commercial queen quilts are often 90 by 90 to 90 by 108 inches.

Does quilting make the quilt smaller?

Yes. Dense quilting and washing shrink a quilt by roughly 2 to 5 percent. If the size matters, add a few inches to each dimension before you plan borders.
